Job Title: Business Development Manager – Division Lead, Solar Energy
1. ROLE PURPOSE
BDM – Division Lead – Solar Energy is a senior leadership role responsible for the end-to-end management and growth of the company’s solar energy business. The incumbent will bring both strong engineering credentials and sharp commercial acumen to build, lead, and scale the solar division into a profitable, technically excellent, and market-leading operation.
This role requires an individual who can seamlessly transition from technical design review to boardroom-level business strategy – driving revenue, managing people, and delivering projects to the highest standard.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Strategic Leadership
Develop and own the solar division’s annual and 5-year strategic business plan, aligned with corporate objectives.
Define the division’s market positioning, product/service offerings, and competitive strategy.
Identify and pursue new market segments, partnerships, and geographic expansion opportunities.
Report directly to the Director on division performance, pipeline, and strategic initiatives.
2.2 Business Development & Commercial Growth
Lead business development activities including bid management, client acquisition, and key account management.
Build and maintain relationships with corporates, government entities, developers, and off-grid communities.
Oversee proposal development, contract negotiations, and deal closure for solar projects (rooftop, C&I, mini-grid, utility-scale).
Drive revenue targets and ensure the division meets annual sales and margin goals.
Develop pricing strategies, financial models, and risk frameworks for project proposals.
2.3 Technical Oversight & Engineering
Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across all solar projects – from feasibility and design through to commissioning.
Review and approve engineering designs, energy yield assessments, equipment specifications, and system architecture.
Ensure all technical work meets international standards (IEC, IEEE) and local regulatory requirements (TANESCO, EWURA).
Drive innovation in technology selection including solar PV, hybrid systems, battery storage (BESS), and smart energy management.
Act as the company’s primary technical authority and thought leader in solar energy.
2.4 Team Management & People Development
Recruit, lead, and develop a high-performing multidisciplinary team including engineers, project managers, and commercial staff.
Set clear performance expectations, conduct appraisals, and create development plans for team members.
Foster a culture of excellence, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Mentor junior engineers and business development staff to build internal capability.
2.5 Project & Operations Management
Oversee the full project lifecycle – from client engagement and design to procurement, construction, and handover.
Ensure all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to contractual quality standards.
Manage relationships with EPC subcontractors, equipment suppliers, and technology partners.
Implement robust project management systems (schedules, budgets, risk registers, HSEQ plans).
Conduct post-project reviews and integrate lessons learned into future delivery.
2.6 Financial Management
Own the division’s P&L, budget, and financial forecasts.
Monitor and report on revenue, gross margin, operating costs, and EBITDA contribution.
Ensure disciplined cost control and working capital management across the project portfolio.
Work with finance to manage receivables, payment milestones, and cash flow.
